Abstract
In the relationship between positive life events and bipolar symptoms (BS), positive rumination (PR) reinforces the BS, whereas savoring plays a discriminatory role in alleviating the BS. In this study, it was assumed that PR and savoring, which are similar upregulation strategies for positive emotions (PE), have opposite effects because the level of activation PE induced by each is different. In other words, we tried to verify the hypothesis that responding with the PR leads to BS through inducing high-activation PE, while responding with savoring reduces BS through creating a low-activation arousal state. For this examination, Positive Life Events Scale, Extended Responses to Positive Affect Questionnaire (E-RPA), Savoring Beliefs Inventory (SBI), Emotional Experience Checklist which are measures based on the circumplex model of affect and Internal State Scale (ISS), Bipolar Spectrum Diagnosis Scale (BSDS) were administered via online survey to 308 cyber university students. As results of applying SPSS PROCESS macro model No. 82, parallel and serial mediation models were supported as assumed when measuring the current BS as a dependent variable. Responding to positive life events with the PR led to high-activation PE and increased BS, while responding with savoring led to low-activation PE and decreased symptoms. On the other hand, when using the past bipolar history as a dependent measure, only the path of savoring and low-activation PE was established among the two mediated paths. These findings confirm that the level of activation of PE can act as a subsequent mechanism for savoring and PR to have conflicting adaptive results. The possibility of an low-activation PE intervention focused on savoring for bipolar disorder was discussed, limitations and future research directions were suggested.
